Public Sector Still Has 'Non-Jobs'

31 December 2008

The TaxPayers' Alliance (TPA) has published a top 10 of public sector "non-jobs" that offer substantial salaries despite the economic downturn. The group published a range of jobs advertised by local authorities, including street football co-ordinator (almost £20,000 a year), community space challenger co-ordinator (up to £33,777) and European programme policy officer (up to £37,109). The TPA said public sector workers were being paid more than equivalent employees in private firms, and that public sector employment increased by 14,000 in the third quarter of 2008 while 128,000 jobs were lost in private companies. Matthew Elliott, chief executive of the TPA, said: "In times of economic hardship it is vitally important that the public sector tightens its belt, just as families are having to. "With the public finances in such a mess, taxpayers can't afford for quangos and councils to splash out on 'non-jobs' that would be an indulgence even in the economic good times." A spokesman for the Local Government Association hit back at the TPA, claiming it was "on a different planet" if it thought that councils were not affected by the tough financial climate. He said: "As the recession bites, local councils are having to tighten their belts in exactly the same way that hard-pressed families are." Copyright © Press Association 2008
