25,000 New Jobs To Boost Leeds

19 January 2009

Councillors in Leeds have said predictions for the future of the city as laid out in a new report are "unduly pessimistic" and more jobs will be created in the city in the coming years. Councillor Andrew Carter, the joint leader of Leeds City Council, said that although "Leeds isn't immune to the economic downturn" the long-term outlook for the city is more optimistic than the Centre for Cities report implied. Mr Carter said 51,000 extra jobs have been created in Leeds since 1998 and forecasts suggest a further 25,000 jobs will be created over the next 10 years. He added that continued investment in infrastructure projects, including a city centre arena, will allow the city to continue to grow. The northern city, often referred to as the Knightsbridge of the North, due to its upmarket retail district and thousands of newly built "city living" flats, has boomed in the past 20 years, transforming itself into a symbol of investment and development. Bold spending and extensive development have caused property prices in the city to soar and investors have been attracted to the area creating thousands of jobs in the non-manufacturing sectors, particularly financial services and retail.
