Brown to reveal teacher pay plan

21 January 2009

Top teachers in poor performing schools could get a £10,000 payment under new measures to improve children's chances of being socially mobile. Starting in September, teachers who have completed three years teaching at the toughest secondary schools could be offered a £10,000 golden handcuffs deal. The move comes as part of a plan to improve social mobility, helping pupils to move up the social ladder and get better jobs than their parents. There are around 500 "National Challenge" schools where this new scheme would apply. These are schools where less than 30% of students achieve five good GCSEs, including maths and English, and where many pupils are eligible for free school meals. According to Government officials, 6,000 new teachers are expected to be covered by the scheme in England, with the cost divided between Whitehall budgets and the school. Currently the average teacher`s salary stands at more than £34,000 and unions have argued that top teachers should be paid more. However if the scheme is implemented it is feared hundreds of thousands of teachers who do not benefit could resent their colleagues. Copyright © Press Association 2009
