Job For Life Ideal 'Not Realisitc'

23 January 2009

The idea of a job for life with just one company is outdated, according to a report, despite 59% of Britons wanting a stable job in one firm. According to the Career Evolution report from Friends Provident despite traditional attitudes of staying loyal to one company, most people have had an average of four jobs, and 20% of the UK's workforce plans to move jobs four times in the next 25 years. Figures also show that the average time spent in one job is falling. Workers spent an average of four years at a job in 2001, compared with five in 1975. Workers not only plan to change jobs, but intend to change their career path along the way. Figures suggest 34% of adults will change their career two or three times in the next 25 years. Martin Palmer, head of corporate pensions marketing at Friends Provident, said: "Brits may idealise the job for life, but it is no longer a reality in the UK. Our report found that many people plan to change their jobs and careers a number of times through their life." Copyright © Press Association 2009
