Cash-strapped police `moonlighting`

26 January 2009

Thousands of police officers across Britain are moonlighting in second jobs as the credit crunch worsens, according to Police Review magazine. It reports that dog hydrotherapist, grave restorer, falconer, hypnotist, bullet maker and lingerie seller are among favoured part-time occupations. But the most popular way to to make ends meet among more than 4,300 officers across 29 forces is by letting property, the magazine reports. This has prompted shadow police minister David Ruffley to say that a future Conservative government would consider banning the practice. He said: "I know in a dire economic climate quite a few people work two jobs. But there will be few exceptional circumstances that we think would permit police officers to do so. "The prime responsibility of an officer of the law is to have all their focus and attention on serving. It is hard to see what circumstances would justify having more than one job."
