Workers Turn To Teaching In Crisis

27 January 2009

The economic downturn is causing workers to turn to teaching, with a 50% rise of people registering their interest in the profession since last year, according to new figures. In the past two-and-a-half months 424,802 people made inquiries through the Teaching and Development Agency (TDA) website, compared with 283,641 for the same period last year, official figures showed. Graham Holley, chief executive of the TDA, said: "We are witnessing an unprecedented surge in inquiries about teaching to our website since the beginning of the credit crunch." The financial crisis has resulted in tens of thousands of jobs going in the past two months and losses are expected to continue in the coming months, with government figures likely to show a rise in unemployment. For people interested in becoming a teacher, the TDA will be holding two events in the City, following the success of a series of events held last autumn. Mr Holley said: "This demonstrates a fast-growing appetite for the rewarding career of teaching. In these uncertain times, teaching is a fulfilling and challenging career as well as a stable one." In the next two years the agency needs to recruit 6,600 science teachers and 5,320 maths teachers. It recruits 38,000 new teachers each year. Copyright © Press Association 2009
